CITY OF FARLEY NEWSLETTER -- JANUARY 1, 2008 -- HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!

Check out our website at www.farleyiowa.com

Farley owes so much to its volunteers. Every year we look back and wonder how we would operate without our volunteers.  Many, many thanks to the Fire Department, Park Board, Farley Development Corp., Planning & Zoning, Board of Adjustment, EMTs,  school groups, Commercial Club, Farley Young Men, Scout leaders, Farley Legion and Auxiliary, Historical Society and the Garden Club.   They all make sacrifices of their time to make Farley the great place that it is.    We wouldn’t be half the community we are without them.  Thank you!!!

Congratulations to our newly elected officials.  Jody Scherrman was re-elected to another four year term for council as was Randy Kramer.  Jason Norton was elected to a four year term for council and will replace retiring Duane Petsche.  Thank you Duane for your service!

SHOVEL SNOW AWAY FROM HYDRANTS:  Public Works asked that we convey the message that for your own safety, please shovel snow from around fire hydrants on or near your property.  Also, please keep the area around the outside meters clear for those persons reading them.  I am sure the gas & electric meter readers will appreciate it also.

SNOW NEWS:  It is against the law to push snow onto the city streets.  Please use your property for disposal of snow; NOT the city street.  Clearing the streets of fallen snow is our job, but our public works employees do not have time, nor do we want to expand the budget to provide for them going back to remove snow pushed there by a resident.

MORE SNOW NEWS:  Street parking of vehicles during snow season -- Snow removal by city workers will be much easier and efficient if cars are not parked on the streets.  Whenever possible, please move your cars off the streets when snow is forecast.   If driveway space is not available, maybe you could utilize your yard temporarily.  Buried cars present a safety hazard, limiting visibility and narrowing the traveled portion of the roadway.  Vehicles violating the 48 hr. street storage ordinance will be ticketed and finally towed, if necessary.  Our police force has no trouble determining violators of this ordinance when cars are covered with snow and the plows have obviously had to drive around them.  We appreciate your cooperation.  For the same reasons cited above, apartment dwellers in the downtown areas are asked to please use off street parking when it is snowing or snow is forecast.  The city removes snow to the curb and hauls it away, and dealing with parked cars slows the process.

Snowmobiles - We would like to give our annual reminder about keeping snowmobiles off private property.  You must travel on snowmobile routes only!  You are not allowed on public streets except when using the most direct route possible to a snowmobile route.  You are never allowed on private property, other than your own.

Animal Pet Licensing.  Current licenses expire on 12/31/07.  You have until March 1, 2008 to renew your license without penalty.  If you have a pet that is currently not licensed, you must contact Chief Wagner at 744-3273 to license your pet. You will need proof of vaccination for licensing.

The first council meeting in January is scheduled for Monday, January 7, 2008 at 7:00 PM.

Christmas tree pickup will be Monday, January 7th.   Place your trees by the curb, removing all trimmings, tinsel, etc.  NO plastic bags.

MEMORIAL HALL OPEN FOR WALKERS:    You may walk at Farley Memorial Hall (upper level), Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  When the weather is wet – rain, snow, etc. – please bring a change of shoes.  If there are conflicts that the hall is not available a sign will be posted as such.  The hall has been well used by many walkers in the past two years and we hope it can continue for many more.

For all the outdoor walkers - If you are out walking before daylight or after dark, please wear reflective clothing.  We have many walkers and we want them all to be safe, but cooperation on your part is necessary to prevent accidents.    During this time of short daylight hours, please protect yourself……

Reminder:  The outside payment box may be used for city utility bills and also for cable.  Many of you already use this convenient payment option.  Save your stamps - drop your payments there!

SAVE YOUR STAMPS AND ALSO A CHECK by signing up for Automatic Withdrawal for your utility bill payments.  We continue to add to the number of people using this option and would be happy to include you!  The payment is withdrawn from your account on the day it is due.  No late payments….ever.  You receive your bill as usual, with the notice that it is Auto Pay – Do Not Pay.  Call 744-3475 if you have any questions.

If a lost animal is located in the city, please contact Chief Wagner before taking the animal into the Humane Society.  The city has its own kennel which the animal can be held until the owner is located.  The Humane Society charges the city an expensive rate for each animal taken in.

The City of Farley is conducting an income survey in order to obtain information necessary to apply for an Iowa DNR Wastewater Treatment Financial Assistance Program (WTFAP) grant to make improvements to its wastewater treatment system.  It is extremely important to the success of this application that you complete the survey.  All information collected will be kept strictly confidential.  City volunteers will be going door to door. Please take a moment to fill out the survey.

The Farley Firemen are collecting pop tabs to be given to the burn unit in Iowa City.  Please take the time to collect your unused tabs.  You may bring your tabs to city hall.  The firemen appreciate any donations from residents and thank all for your support!

Park Board - the Farley Park Board has an open position to fill.  If you are interested in being part of an energetic group of volunteers please contact city hall at 744-3475.

We have a various number of vehicle keys that were turned in to city hall.  Please call to claim.
